First my HDD is failing and making a load of noise, causing TC:E to run slow, lags etc. So I get a new HDD, and now when I play TC:E in windoze (I have two installations) my PC shuts down and reboots! And Linux just freezes after about 2 seconds of loading the map ... so it's a new hardware problem. I updated my BIOS which I thought might solve the problem as it said that some 3d benchmark crashed were resolved ... still no joy. I'll keep trying, but until I get a couple hundred quid to upgrade the whole system, I'll just have to battle on.
