there is the 386-version for 32 and one for 64bit,
go for the CD maybe older 7.04 , 7.10 or brand new 8.04
- you can boot the system from the CD and even use it as a live-system with browser, office-suite and graphics-apps ... some simple games etc. ready to use ...
but! it may need some settings for screensize (change screen-settings and logout, login in session) and if you have a nvidia-graphics-card you have only the software-3d-emulation as default. You need to install the special-nvidia-drivers (works with menu synaptic) and for this a little install with boot of harddisk is better ....

new: the 8.04 version comes with something to install it on a windows-partition and start it from windows .... but i did not try it......
have no windows ...

by the way, init should write down his hardware-main-specs to get those fps-rates.
my 4000fps with glxgears was with amd-sempron-3000+ at 1.8GHz and
a GeForce-6600

ps. if the network-interface is autodetect and you have a router to setup the internet-path+address (dhcp-config?) the bootable ubuntu-CDs are like the knoppix-DVDs (but not so big: CD <->DVD) and an easy way to have a clean internet-browsing-computer .... if you ever doubt your windows got some health-problems... virus.. infection .. flue ... gippy, diarrhoea...
