Portal for free |
|
Portal used to cost money. Until May 24th, it's free. End of story.
Well, technically speaking, there are some strings attached. Fortunately, they're entirely decorative. We just like the way they look, swaying in the gentle breeze created by a million people simultanously fainting from shock at the news that Portal is free. Now you have no reason not to try Portal.
"I have a reason," some of you are probably typing into an angry email. "You see, sir, I own a Mac."
Well guess what: For the first time ever, Portal is also available for the Mac.
"Capital news! But the excellent puzzle adventure Portal won over 40 Game of the Year awards; Surely it must cost at least five or six hundred dollars."
You'd think that, especially since it actually won over 70 Game of the Year Awards. But, like we keep saying, Portal is free. Free on the Mac. Free on the PC. But only until May 24th. So you only have a few days to decide if your free copy of Portal is worth the price we're currently charging - which is you ever-so-slightly moving your index finger just barely enough to click the big red "download" button right there to the left.

You all make me feel so old... What the heck is Portal? Never heard of that. And since when do Kirk AND McCoy nod at the same time? You do all that just to embarrass me.

it is nothing special.
first-person puzzle game.
can be fun for a while.
like it or hate it. |
I really liked it - it was maybe a little too easy, though. Level 18 was a bit of a mindbender (for me ). I liked to take out those turrets. Sooooo funny when they forgive you that you disabled them. Nice Idea.

TriffiD yesterday installed and today he talk about Level 18. I, yesterday installed and today I have only make my settings .He have too much time. |
Well, errm, actually I only installed it yesterday. I started playing at about 11:00 today and was done at about 6 pm (with a 1 h lunch break)... If a game really gets me hot, I cannot stop. I always plan to only finish this level, but then - you know what happens. Yes, I dropped work for a whole day - but my boss is on vacation and I have 2 full weeks to catch up.
And Rudi:
^That means "Thank you".
And yes: Doctor Who is one of my favourites.

Ah, and while we're at it: What I find particularly great is when people do skilly stuff on things from nice little games:
If you finish Portal, you can hear a song, sung by the GLaDOS while the credits are shown. The song is called "Still Alive" by Jonathan Coulton. And as always there are some fantastic covers on youtube like this one. Pure fun.
What a pitty that the cake is a lie...

I admit this is not everybody's game. But it is nicely done. They apparently updated the game recently just to put in some new behaviour for totally useless radios to play a certain sound when placed to 26 places around the game. Those sounds can be translated into pictures (like fax) with a special software. Those pictures give you a phone number, username and password for an old BBS with some (probably useless) information about "Aperture Science". I love it, when the publishers of games do such things only to entertain their audience. Who does that nowadays?
If I did not get it wrong, there might be a second part of Portal available around Xmas. I am veeeery tempted.

yeah, i'm looking forward to that too.
i hope they'll bring up some good new ideas though, cause lots of its fascination (at least for me) came with the uniqueness of the gameplay. i also hope it will keep the charm of an "indy game".
