Evil or Very Mad
I tried to set up a PC with Linux (Ubuntu) to do some recording-jobs with a built in DVB-S (skystar2 + 2/1 DISEqC Switch) card using vdr. Just "power on" - "dump the stream" - "power off".
After 4 days I am finaly able to say

AAAAAAAHHHHHHHRRRRRRRRGGGGGGGGGGH

I must be really stupid.

relax triffid, it takes some time (seriously) to get the settings done. scientific working is awsome on linux, thats why i installed it. (free compilers, plotting programs, already installed pdf-converters, LaTeX, and once your used to it, the almighty bash.
On the other hand: you cant listen to mp3 streams from the scratch, installing GFX-drivers is a bitch.
Once all was setted for TCE, i realised that i cant press more then 3(foward+scoreboard+run+jump+shoot) keys at the same time. but as rudi already mentioned you arent the first person with these problems, search a random ubuntu forum and read, read, read.

Oops - Sorry guys - I didn't mean to cry for help actually. I just wanted to cry a little.
This was my third try with linux and I even got a general idea of what its all about. I know the console and I managed to install samba and make up a SSH connection so I can login from anywhere and work on it. That was really easy, but whenever I try to make Linux do some work for me, I fail.

I searched google for hours, found a ton of solutions and there was not one (!) working. I tried to compile sources - it didnt work! There were errors every single time (surely because some fancy dependencies I did not install before). I found a lot of (admittedly ingenious) apt-packages that I could install with apt-get, but it never worked properly.
In the end I managed to dump a stream (alright - no DISEqC support, but what the hell... at least it worked a little) and I tried to setup a package to wake my pc up from standby or hibernation... and guess what... it didn't work at all. I even nearly killed my BIOS NVRAM.
I could go on for hours like that and that is it why I wanted to cry. This was really ridiculous.
I don't want to post on a forum. I wouldn't even know what to ask exactly. And I don't have the patience to wait for days to get answers to take me only to the next millimeter-step. That would go on for years.

But Rudi: Thank you - Though I searched a looooot, your page really was on of the best so far and helped understanding.

For now I activated the windows-partition. Maybe I try again in a few weeks. It is actually fun to work with linux, but I still doubt its practical values for anyone but the real gurus and in highly specialised devices (like my router e.g.).

compiling under ubuntu suxx Very Happy
you don't even have the default headers installed with a fresh ubuntu argh!

had similar fun like you triffid when i tryed to get the bloody graphics driver run (needed to compile a new kernel in the end and therefore i needed to get the compiler and the headers Very Happy) but yes wiki.ubuntuusers.de is the best webpage i found so far (theres a solution for nearly everything there, and when i go there i read one article and another and another, because theres so much interesting stuff linked xD)

I don't really feel like contradicting, Deimos... Maybe it is not really a bad thing, but only useful if you are an absolute geek.
I will try it again, though. I think there is a way. Maybe vcr is the wrong choice. I think - with a few scripts, xine alone could do the trick.
Hmmm - maybe next year.
